What test protocols can we use to mitigate the risks when buying electronic components? A good place to start is the IDEA-STD-1010-A Standard which describes a rigorous optical inspection regime supplemented by tests on the marking inks. It will not detect all the counterfeits. Why not? It does not offer any functional testing, nor does it use any of the more sophisticated materials characterisation techniques available today. We have based our Counterfeit Detection Service upon the IDEA-STD-1010-A Standard, which we then supplement with a higher level of testing using very high optical magnification, plus high-resolution real time X-ray inspection, and the additional use of material detection techniques such as XRF (X-ray Fluorescence). X-ray inspection allows for the internal structure on the component to be checked against a known standard. The location of the die and bond wires can be seen, although sadly silicon is transparent to X-rays. XRF is used to measure the elemental composition of the component, and is commonly used to confirm RoHS compliance. Both techniques are very fast and offer an insight into the materials used in the component’s manufacturing process. We have also recently developed a new in-house non destructive method for detecting when a component has been blacktopped, thus far it has proven to be 100% reliable (as proven by subsequent de-capping tests). This technique is likely to be impossible to fool so we are offering this service without disclosing our procedure, which will allow us the ability to offer a totally unique service. The non destructive testing can also be supplemented by advanced destructive techniques which allow for silicon inspection after encapsulant removal and inspection of a cross section by SEM. Under high power optics the silicon can be inspected for the manufacturers mark and part numbers.
